It is with great delight that we welcome back sixteen teams, comprising one hundred and twenty eight of the World’s greatest cyclists, to compete in our second edition of the Tour of Oman. A humble tribute to the wise leadership of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, the Tour of Oman has already proven itself to be one of the great event highlights of the Sultanate.
Our vision for Muscat is to develop a sustainable, modern and growing economy, whilst ensuring we preserve our traditions. In February 2011 the Tour will be one of the key highlights of the Muscat Festival, an annual showcase of our heritage and culture. Alongside a Muscat Fashion Week, an Oman Food Festival, the international Extreme Sailing competition and an Oman Heritage and Cultural Village, the Tour will enable us to promote the beauty and warmth of the Sultanate internationally as well as provide our next generation with a powerful showcase of the stamina required to succeed, in all aspects of life.
The six stages chosen by Eddy Merckx include a loop around the historic city of Sur and two steep climbs in successive stages. Stage Four will see the riders climb part way up the imposing Jabal Al Akhdhar, with Stage Five set as a time trial from Bander Al Jissah to the Al Bustan roundabout and back. We will also see the riders pass by Sultan Qaboos University, Bidbid, al Sawadi, Qurayyat and al Seeb with the final rankings again being decided on the finish line at the Matrah Corniche.
We warmly welcome you all to come and watch the Tour of Oman and join our full programme of festivities taking place in February.
His Excellency Eng. Sultan bin Hamdoon Al Harthi
Head of Muscat Municipality
